Which berries and vegetables help protect against cancer

Blueberries may help prevent cancer, according to Dr. Mariyat Mukhina, a Doctor of Medical Sciences and nutritionist. She explained that the blue color of these berries comes from their high concentration of anthocyanins.

“Anthocyanins have powerful antioxidant properties that protect cells from oxidative stress, which can prevent DNA mutations and the development of cancer cells,” the doctor assured.

Previously, Russian scientists discovered anti-cancer properties in four types of currants. Currants, for instance, contain cyanidins – a subtype of anthocyanins. These berries also contain acacetin, a compound known for its anti-cancer effects.

Dr. Mukhina added that other berries also exhibit similar properties. For example, raspberries contain ellagic acid, which can induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in tumor cells and help prevent metastasis, she emphasized.

“Some clinical trials have shown that raspberry extract slows tumor growth in mice,” the doctor noted.

She also recommended including garlic and tomatoes in the diet to help prevent cancer.

“Studies have shown that regular tomato consumption may reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men. In one study of patients with prostate cancer, PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels decreased after increased consumption of tomatoes and tomato-based products,” she explained.
